Everything You Need to Know About Tinting Auto Glass

Last updated 6 years ago

In addition to giving your car or truck a stylish look, auto glass tinting has many practical advantages. For example, window tinting protects your eyes from the sun’s glare and your dashboard from harmful rays. And the best part is that auto glass tinting is so quick, easy, and inexpensive that if your car windows are ever replaced, you can re-tint with little to no inconvenience. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to auto glass tinting:

  • Tinting Laws – Window tint laws in California specify how dark or reflective your auto glass tint may be. Darkness is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage, or VLT%, a measurement which refers to the percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of tint and natural window treatment.
  • Types of Tint – There are a number of different types of auto glass tint to choose from, including dyed, deposited, sputtered, and hybrid films. Each film is manufactured differently and varies in terms of both appearance and functionality.
  • Tint Care – It’s important to know which products and materials are safe to use on your tinted windshield if you want to keep it looking and performing great. Luckily, there are a number of specialty products available which will help take the guesswork out of selecting a safe cleaning product.
  • Tint Removal – Whether you are replacing your windshield, re-applying tint, or repairing damaged film, the day may come when you may need to remove the tint from your auto glass. Although you can do this yourself, the process is often a sticky and frustrating experience, so you may want to contact your local auto glass shop for assistance.
