Glass on the Move - Why Cars Have Windshields

Last updated 7 years ago

Cars didn’t always have windshields. Very early automobiles required passengers to wear goggles in high speeds due to the fact that they had no windshield protection.  When glass windshields were first introduced in the early 20th century, they began using laminated glass to prevent the auto glass from shattering.

Here are some reasons why vehicles have windshields today:

A car’s windshield makes driving in inclement weather much safer. Heavy rain can block a driver’s vision and wind can impair a driver’s hearing. A car’s windshield also keeps bugs and insects from entering the vehicle, and more importantly, the driver’s line of site.

Windshields are partly responsible for how most cars look today. This now-necessary feature changed the overall look of vehicles, and was one stop closer to having most vehicles be fully enclosed like they are today.

Now that cars have windshields, driving is much easier and more pleasurable than it was when automobiles were first on the market. Windshields make it possible to drive through any type of weather in complete comfort.
